Elliott leading Gies Business into a new era of purpose

W. Brooke Elliott is poised to shape the future of business education in her new role as dean of the University of Illinois’ Gies College of Business. As the 11th dean and first woman to hold this position in the college's century-old history, Elliott brings a deep understanding of the evolving landscape of higher education.  Committed to preserving Gies’ Top 10 public business school status and furthering its land-grant mission, Elliott is focused on delivering innovative, transformative programs for its undergraduate and graduate students.

Gies Business has long been a pioneer in breaking down barriers to higher education – most notably through its online graduate programs and certificates that reach learners from more than 100 countries. As associate dean from 2020 to 2022, Elliott guided this growth, steering these offerings through the pandemic and meeting record demand for flexible, high-quality education.

Expanding Access to Education

Now, Elliott aims to expand this life-changing accessibility to the undergraduate space. A top priority is increasing scholarship funds, making a Gies Business education more affordable for students from diverse backgrounds.

“Our College is unfortunately out of reach for a number of learners who could absolutely thrive here,” said Elliott, a Gies faculty member for 21 years. “We want to create an inclusive experience for everyone, regardless of financial barriers. Our goal is to shape purposeful leaders, and we need to do everything possible to ensure access for as many learners as possible.”

Fostering an Inclusive Community

By removing these barriers, Elliott aims to make Gies Business a destination for students passionate about business and eager to make a positive impact on the world. In addition to scholarships, she is also committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment.

“I believe in building a community where individuals feel empowered to be their authentic selves,” said Elliott, who often sports a t-shirt, blazer, and Air Jordans on campus. “We want everyone to feel seen, heard, and valued, no matter who they are. We want you to be yourself every single day.”

A Commitment to Innovation

During her two decades at Gies, Elliott’s leadership has been marked by a commitment to innovation. Her significant contributions include leading a group that designed undergraduate core curriculum, serving as executive officer of the top-ranked Department of Accountancy, and creating a collaborative structure across academic programs. She also has developed and taught several financial reporting and analysis courses to learners ranging from undergraduates to executives.

“Gies College of Business is a leader in disrupting the status quo and shifting its weight toward the future,” said Chancellor Robert Jones, who considers it an example of higher education excellence on a massive scale. “Dean Elliott exemplifies a borderless, comprehensive approach to research, teaching, and public engagement. I’m confident that she will continue to be a collaborative leader who pushes us to think differently about how we deliver on our mission.”

Empowering the Next Generation of Leaders

As Gies College of Business enters a new era, Elliott is ensuring the college remains agile and adaptable. For the newly minted dean, this means prioritizing the elements that make a business education meaningful and relevant. Elliott aims to provide a supportive and inclusive environment that equips students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to succeed in their careers and make a positive impact on society.

“We believe in continuous improvement and building on our deep understanding of where our learners come from, what their experiences look like, and how those experiences vary,” she said. “Our goal is to empower every learner to find their path to purpose, put it into practice, and proudly represent Gies."
